Start with the Life Palace
The Life Palace is the chart's center of gravity. The major star in this palace describes a person's basic temperament and life style. If the Life Palace has no major star, the opposite palace, the Travel Palace, is used as a borrowed reference.

Ziwei Doushu does not read one palace in isolation. Each palace is shaped by its san fang si zheng, often translated as the three directions and four upright positions.
For the Life Palace, this includes:
- The Life Palace itself: the direct placement.
- The opposite palace: the Travel Palace, often the strongest mirror.
- The Wealth Palace: one triangular support point.
- The Career Palace: another triangular support point.
This is why an empty Life Palace is not automatically weak. Strong stars in the opposite palace, Wealth Palace, or Career Palace can still create a clear and powerful structure.
