What is Geomancy?

Geomancy originated in the 9th-century Arab world, known in Arabic as "علم الرمل" (Ilm al-Raml), meaning "the science of sand." Practitioners would draw random dots in the sand, with the odd/even count producing figures. During the 10th-12th centuries, the Crusades brought this art to Europe, where it became one of the "Three Great Medieval Occult Arts" alongside astrology and alchemy. The 16 basic figures correspond to the four elements (Fire, Air, Water, Earth), seven planets, and twelve zodiac signs. Independent traditions also developed in Africa (Ifá) and Madagascar (Sikidy). Geomancy is particularly suited for yes/no questions and determining the fortune of events.
